Recap of Summer and the mid-August Blahs

I started the summer committed to writing after every weekend sailing adventure, and posting pictures of the fun aboard Aquavit. Here is is August and 2 months have gone by without a single posting. What happened to this summer!? What happened to this blog!? I would like to say that my lack of time (13 hour work days, crazy busy weekends) were to blame, but honestly, how long does it take to type out a paragraph or two each week? I now have the mid-August blahs and am starting to feel that creeping sensation that fall is just around the corner. I dread the first leaf I see turned.

Summer 2010 was full of lots of friends and family on the boat and was overall, a fantastic season due to the hot and dry weather - perhaps, the best ever? After a fun (and challenging due to conditions!) trip to Lake Ontario aboard Bryan and Michele's "Yellow Dog" Catalina 30' in late June, we were visited by Barb and David Richard (Dave went to college with Curt at R.I.T.) over 4th of July weekend. It was hot. Like Mississippi hot. We still had a good sail around the Bay and it was slightly cooler on the boat. The following weekend Chrys and Mike (Curt's sister and brother in law) joined us for a sail and we had a great time, again just sailing around the Bay and then enjoying a nice dinner at DeWolf Tavern, watching the sunset over Bristol Harbor...

Curt and I escaped to Jamestown for an overnight mid-July and then Kerry and Tim Brosnihan joined us for an overnight again in Jamestown (can you tell Jamestown is one of our favorite spots?) the following weekend. We got off to a slow start as the batteries were left "on" and we were left with a dead battery unable to start the boat. A quick trip to West Marine saved the day and we were finally on our way. In Jamestown we enjoyed some seafood at Jamestown Oyster Bar and then a few drinks at the tikki hut behind Tricia's Tropi-Grille. Tim was brave and did a moonlight swim off of the back of our boat (partly due to necessity as we had stupidly run out of water on the boat and he needed a good rinse!).

Rian Dittmer and Lara Broom joined us for an overnight in late July in East Greenwich, RI. On this trip we took the pooches (yes, plural - we adopted an adorable Pekingese named Ming who is completely fine with the whole sailing thing). Had a good dinner at the Post Office Cafe there and Ming kept Lara and Rian company all night - with his funny snoring and all. Marta was her usual seaworthy self and very tolerant of her new younger brother.

Our last big trip was with the Texans, Susie and Chuck Kennard. We sailed down to Jamestown for the first night and were intent on going to Block Island the next day. We awoke to heavy fog and rough seas (5-6' waves) beyond the Bay. Extremely uncomfortable conditions to say the least. We finally turned around after the captain called the trip and went back to Jamestown. We enjoyed Newport for a day, Chuck and I had a swim off the back of the boat, enjoyed dinner in town, and then moved on to Wickford, RI (adorable town) and were quite content at a cozy dock at Brewer's there before sailing back (with a lot of wind!) to Bristol the next day. Not the trip we had planned, but we had a really good time nonetheless. It was great to make it into Wickford which was recently dredged so that it can now accommodate our somewhat deep draft. All I have to say is...BLOCK ISLAND 2011!

More news, postings, soon...Another few precious months of sailing until Aquavit has a much needed rest until next spring. Us too.
